Almost ÂŁ6,000 in penalties, court fees, and a victim surcharge have been imposed on the offenders. Because of what they did, all of them now have criminal records.
People with criminal records are often required to resign from their positions.
The Croydon Magistrates’ Court recently heard the following cases.
When they weren’t there, Shantana Hines of Loampit Vale, London, used a holder’s badge. She was required to pay ÂŁ732 in total.
When Ngabo Bugimbi of White Lodge Close, Sutton, went to retrieve something from his workplace, he was discovered using a badge that did not belong to him. He was required to pay ÂŁ1,040 in total.
For using a stolen badge, Hamid Ghani of Briar Avenue, London, was fined ÂŁ1,180.
After being discovered using a Blue Badge that did not belong to her, Lavonica Latifat Steele Egbonwon of Cairo New Road, Croydon, was sentenced to pay ÂŁ440.
The court found Whitehorse Lane, Croydon resident Paige Sheldon Gordon guilty of using a fake badge and ordered her to pay ÂŁ1,120.
Onslow Gardens, Wallington resident Aiaz Khan admitted to using someone else’s Blue Badge and was given a ÂŁ540 fine.
Wellington Wilson of Warbank Crescent, Croydon, was forced to pay ÂŁ760 when it was discovered that he was using a stolen badge.
Executive Mayor Jason Perry’s emphasis on combating antisocial behavior and safeguarding legitimate Blue Badge holders who depend on accessible parking to lead independent lives is reflected in this zero-tolerance policy.
This is a component of the ongoing enforcement campaign against misuse of Blue Badges, which includes the use of fake badges, badges that belong to a deceased person, and badges that have been lost or stolen all of which are crimes.
As part of a crackdown since May, the Council has issued Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs), confiscated misused Blue Badges, seized 32 vehicles, and challenged over 90 individuals.
Twenty prosecutions are planned between now and March 2026, and they will continue in the upcoming months.
Three of the unclaimed vehicles have been crushed, while 29 of the seized vehicles have been picked up by their owners.
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon said:
“These convictions show we are actively enforcing against those who abuse Blue Badges in Croydon. This behaviour takes advantage of residents with mobility issues, and it will not be tolerated. Anyone caught abusing the rules can expect firm action, significant financial penalties and a criminal conviction.
I have been clear that we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour in Croydon. Residents want tougher action, and the Council is responding. These seven convictions will not be the last.”
Only when the badge holder is traveling in the car or when someone is picking them up or dropping them off and has to park can a blue badge be displayed. It is considered misuse to run errands for a Blue Badge holder who is not onboard.
