Croydon Council has brought seven Blue Badge cheaters to court after they were discovered abusing parking permits intended for individuals with disabilities.
Twenty more convictions are planned over the next three months, according to the town hall, which is adopting a “zero-tolerance approach” to drivers who misuse the badges.
As part of the blitz, the council reported that since May, it has challenged over 90 individuals, confiscated over 70 misused Blue Badges, seized 32 cars, and smashed three vehicles.
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, said:
“This behaviour takes advantage of residents with mobility issues, and it will not be tolerated.
Anyone caught abusing the rules can expect firm action, significant financial penalties and a criminal conviction.
I have been clear that we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour in Croydon. Residents want tougher action…These seven convictions will not be the last.”
Last year, the Blue Badge Fraud Investigation (BBFI) agency issued a warning that because of their benefits, permits are being stolen, falsified, and sold online.
The program allows holders to park for free in pay-and-display areas and for up to three hours on yellow lines, and it provides disabled individuals with access to specifically designed reserved bays.
Additionally, drivers who possess the licenses are not required to pay the ÂŁ15 daily London Congestion Charge.
Hamid Ghani of London’s Briar Avenue was fined ÂŁ1,180 for using a stolen badge.
After being discovered using a Blue Badge that was not hers, Lavonica Latifat Steele Egbonwon of Cairo New Road, Croydon, was sentenced to pay ÂŁ440.
After being found guilty of using a fake badge, Paige Sheldon Gordon of Whitehorse Lane, Croydon, was forced to pay ÂŁ1,120.
