Clapham, London (South London News) April 2, 2026 – Police in Clapham, south London, authorised a dispersal order on Tuesday evening after large crowds of youths gathered on Clapham High Street, causing widespread anti-social behaviour that prompted shop closures and arrests. Two teenage girls were among those initially arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and taken into custody, as part of a broader response to disturbances fuelled by social media trends. The incidents, which echoed similar unrest on the previous Saturday, saw around 100 officers deployed to restore order amid reports of shop intrusions, fireworks, and assaults.

What Triggered the Youth Gatherings in Clapham?

The disturbances stemmed from so-called “link-ups” organised via social media platforms including TikTok and Snapchat, drawing hundreds of young people to Clapham during the Easter school holidays. As reported by BBC News, these online trends inspired youths to swarm the high street, attempting to enter shops and a restaurant while igniting fires and discharging fireworks on Clapham Common. Footage circulating on social media, as highlighted by The Independent, showed large crowds of masked young people gathering outside McDonald’s, sprinting away from police cars, and causing smoke to billow from the common, with one TikTok caption warning:

“Do NOT attend Clapham Courts linkups.”

On Saturday, disruption first emerged when more than 100 teenagers gathered in a supermarket, leading to reports of shoplifting and prompting an initial police response.

By Tuesday, crowds swelled to around 300 by 19:00 BST, filtering from basketball courts to the high street, as detailed in a Metropolitan Police update shared by Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP. ITV News London reported that children surged into food shops, with businesses like Sainsbury’s and McDonald’s targeted, resulting in thefts of food items.

Who Were Arrested and What Charges Do They Face?

Six teenage girls have been arrested across the two days, according to the Metropolitan Police. On Tuesday around 17:00 BST, three girls—one aged 17 and two aged 13—were detained on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker after police were called to the scene. The 17-year-old has been charged and released on bail, scheduled to appear in court later this month, while the two 13-year-olds were also bailed.

Earlier on Saturday, three other girls—two aged 16 and one aged 15—were arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and assault amid the high street chaos. A Met Police spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Express:

“At this time two teenage girls have been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency service worker and have been taken into custody.”

Sky News updated that three girls were arrested following the Tuesday swarms. Police have warned that more arrests are anticipated, with a spokesperson stating:

“Just because you haven’t been arrested yet doesn’t imply that you won’t be,”

as they review CCTV and body-worn footage.

How Did Police Respond to the Clapham Disorder?

Officers acted swiftly, deploying approximately 100 personnel to Clapham High Street on Tuesday following reports of anti-social behaviour. A Section 35 dispersal order was authorised, granting powers to direct individuals to leave the area if involved in or likely to engage in such conduct, as noted in an Instagram post from local updates. The Evening Standard reported the order’s implementation amid ongoing chaos.

During the response, four officers and one civilian were assaulted, according to The Guardian. A Met Police spokesperson told the Daily Express:

“Authorities are reacting to an ongoing situation Claph High Street reports of substantial crowd of young individuals engaging in anti-social conduct. Officers are present at the location, and a dispersal order has been established.”

Increased patrols continue, with Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond stating:

“Our officers will continue to maintain a strong, visible presence around Clapham and we will respond robustly to any reports of disorder, thefts or planned meet-ups.”

What Impact Did the Incidents Have on Local Businesses?

Shopkeepers expressed fear and braced for repeats, locking doors as youths—estimated at 70 to 80 in some cases—pushed into premises. Sheikh Awais, working at Rooster Spot chicken shop, told ITV News London:

“Many children came to the high street and police were catching some people but then at least 70 to 80 children came into our shop as well. They were shouting and sitting there, some were rude and aggressive with me.”

Yash from Olive and Meze near Sainsbury’s added:

“I was working here and I witnessed it all. Once the police came to Sainsbury’s, they ran to McDonald’s and there was a fight. I had to close the door… There were a lot of them, you would say around a thousand running around.”

Raz, manager of Venus Barber shop, observed:

“I saw them from the window running down the street. I heard they had organised it on social media and apparently the police were aware of it as well.”

Another unnamed shop owner noted:

“It is very strange, the shops they go to. It is not trainer shops or anything, it’s food.”

The disruption hit peak evening trade, damaging business, with food outlets like McDonald’s reporting thefts.

What Are Officials Saying About the Clapham Youth Chaos?

Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond of the Metropolitan Police urged parents:

“The parents or guardians of those involved in last night’s disorder also have a role to play. I’d appeal to them to take responsibility, to be proactive in knowing where their children are and who they’re with, and to take steps to make sure they’re not involved in this sort of unacceptable antisocial behaviour.”

She further warned youths:

“I’d urge those young people who think this is just a bit of fun to carefully consider the consequences… If you join in or cause further disorder, you should expect to be arrested and risk a criminal record.”

Bell Ribeiro-Addy, Labour MP for Clapham and Brixton Hill, stated on 1 April 2026 via UKPol:

“I’m very concerned by the recent scenes of unrest on Clapham High Street. This intimidating behaviour causes havoc for local residents and businesses alike. It is inexcusable.”

She added that while the incident was “quite pronounced,” it is not unprecedented:

“We’ve seen a rise in such occurrences, especially during school holidays. We need to focus on preventing young people from attending these gatherings in the first place.”

The MP noted police plans for increased patrols and shared a Met update: “From approx. 1600hrs crowds started to increase around Basketball Courts which then filtered into Clapham High Street. At around 1900hrs crowds had increased to around 300 causing ASB… Three people arrested for assault / Public order offences.”
