The Mayor of Lewisham, Liam Shrivastava, joined a group of staff and supporters from Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL) to complete the Lewisham Three Peaks Challenge over the weekend, helping to raise money for the charity’s ‘Safe Futures’ campaign.
On Sunday the group walked the circular 5-mile route across three of Lewisham’s green spaces – Hilly Fields, One Tree Hill and Blythe Hill Fields.
AFRIL’s campaign, which is running from 2nd – 18th June, aims to support the health, confidence and safety of refugee and asylum-seeking children in South East London. Donations will provide healthy food at the charity’s food bank, fun and activities in its allotment, safe housing through expert casework, and specialised education and trips at its weekly Rainbow Club school.
All donations made towards the £10,000 campaign target are being match-funded by The Childhood Trust and Topinambour Trust.
Chloe White, chief executive of AFRIL, said:
“We had a lovely day for our challenge, bringing together 25 people from all backgrounds. We’ve had some great feedback on the work we’re doing to support vulnerable people in the local community, and we’re delighted that our funding target is now within reach.
“Thanks to the kind donations, we’ll be able to support 200 local children living in poverty through our projects, improving their health, wellbeing, living conditions, confidence and educational attainment.”
