Teddington (South London News) August 3, 2026 — a blue car, a hammer, and a cash machine ripped from the pavement. That is the scene captured on CCTV outside a Londis convenience store on Kingston Road in the early hours of Wednesday, 29 July 2026.

As reported by journalists at the Evening Standard and other outlets covering the incident, the sequence began at around 12.50am when a man wearing a beanie, jeans and a black top approached the ATM with a hammer, attempting to smash it open. After failing to break into the machine, he and the driver of a blue car attached white cables to the ATM before the driver reversed and tore the entire unit from its foundation, dragging it along the street.

The first man then returned to the rubble-strewn spot where the machine had stood, checking the ground for any散落 cash. Meanwhile, CCTV shows a young woman walking past on her phone, apparently unaware of the heist taking place beside her, while other vehicles drove by.

Who are the suspects and what have police said?

Police are now hunting four men in connection with the raid, despite only two being visible in the CCTV footage released so far. An abandoned vehicle has also been seized as part of the investigation.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said:

“Police are investigating the theft of a cash machine from outside a shop in Kingston Road, Teddington at 00:53hrs on Wednesday, 29 July. Although no arrests have been made at this stage, an abandoned vehicle has been seized in connection with the incident, and officers continue to work at pace to identify the four men believed to be involved.”

The force has asked anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 302/29JUL. Anonymous reports can be shared via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 using the same reference.

How was the ATM removed from the pavement?

The method used by the thieves followed a pattern seen in similar “ram-raid” ATM thefts across the UK in recent years. After the initial attempt with a hammer failed, the suspects hooked cables to the machine and used the car’s towing power to rip it from the ground.

Footage reviewed by multiple media titles shows the boot of the blue car remaining open as the cables were attached. The driver then reversed sharply, pulling the ATM free in a matter of seconds. The first suspect watched on before returning to search the area where the machine had been anchored.

What is the wider context of ATM thefts in the UK?

This incident forms part of a broader trend of brazen ATM heists in which gangs use vehicles, heavy machinery or tools to remove cash machines from shopfronts and pavements. Similar incidents have been reported in locations including Milton Keynes, Cambridgeshire and other parts of southern England, often involving diggers, telehandlers or bulldozers.

As noted in coverage by the BBC and regional news outlets, such raids are typically carried out in the early hours when streets are quieter, and the entire operation — from arrival to escape — can take under five minutes.

Background of the development

ATM thefts using vehicles or heavy equipment have become a recurring challenge for retailers and police forces across the UK. In many cases, the machines are targeted for their cash cassettes, which can contain thousands of pounds. While some gangs manage to extract the money on site, others tow the entire unit away to break into it later at a more secure location.

Security measures such as reinforced fixings, anti-ram barriers and improved CCTV coverage have been introduced in recent years, but criminals continue to adapt their methods. The Teddington incident illustrates how quickly such raids can unfold and how little disruption they sometimes cause to passers-by, who may remain unaware until after the thieves have fled.

Prediction: How this development can affect local residents and businesses

If similar raids continue in Teddington and neighbouring areas, local businesses may face increased insurance costs and pressure to invest in enhanced security measures such as stronger ATM fixings, bollards and improved lighting. For residents, the psychological impact of seeing such brazen thefts on their doorstep could raise concerns about safety, particularly at night.

Police appeals for information suggest that public cooperation will be crucial in identifying suspects. Should the investigation lead to arrests, it may deter similar attempts in the short term. However, without sustained preventive measures, the risk of repeat incidents remains.
