As reported by Deb Gayen of Your Local Guardian, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were dispatched to John Ruskin College on Selsdon Park Road at approximately 5:08 pm after receiving reports of an individual armed with a bladed weapon. Video footage circulated from the scene showed a masked suspect clad in dark clothing pursuing another person across the college grounds while carrying what appeared to be a large knife or machete. Students and staff were visible nearby as the incident unfolded, before the armed suspect exited the premises.

As reported by Deb Gayen of Your Local Guardian, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated that “around 17:08hrs, officers attended a college in Selsdon Park Road, Croydon, following reports that a person had been seen with a bladed weapon.” The spokesperson further noted that “police attended, but, by the time they arrived, the suspect had left the scene” and added that “no arrests have been made, and officers are seeking to locate the suspect, who is believed to be a teenager.” Police confirmed that “no injuries were reported, and the college was temporarily placed on lockdown while officers made enquiries,” before confirming that the lockdown had subsequently been lifted.

As reported by Your Local Guardian, an eyewitness student who wished to remain anonymous stated:

“I noticed this person waiting outside the smoking area.”

The student added that “as soon as another person came out of the building, the person with the knife went off on them,” recounting,

“I felt fearful; I thought ‘oh my god, how is this happening’.”

As reported by Mirror News, parents shared accounts on social media describing how students contacted them from inside locked classrooms to report that they were unable to exit the school buildings while emergency enquiries were conducted.

As reported by Your Local Guardian, neighbouring Quest Academy also implemented precautionary containment measures during the event. A spokesperson for Quest Academy confirmed that “pupils were allowed to leave as soon as the school was given the all-clear.”

What is the background of this development?

The security incident at John Ruskin College occurs amidst ongoing public concern regarding knife-related offences in South London educational institutions and surrounding public transport hubs. Over recent years, local councils and the Metropolitan Police have implemented enhanced safety protocols across Croydon, including temporary deployment of metal detection arches, community knife arches, and targeted youth engagement initiatives. Educational sites in the borough operate under standardized emergency response frameworks designed to secure pupils inside classrooms when threats are identified nearby.

What is the prediction for how this development can affect the community?

This development is likely to prompt immediate security reviews across educational institutions in the London Borough of Croydon. School administrators, local authorities, and police liaison units are expected to re-examine access control protocols and emergency lockdown procedures to address potential vulnerabilities on campus perimeters.

For students, parents, and teaching staff, the event may increase demand for enhanced visible security measures and mental health support services to address safety concerns. Furthermore, the ongoing police search for the unidentified suspect may lead to heightened law enforcement presence and increased stop-and-search operations around local transport nodes and school zones during peak arrival and dismissal hours.
