South London (South London News) – July 8, 2026: Bellingham railway station, located in the London Borough of Lewisham near Catford, was temporarily renamed “Jude Bellingham” on 5 July as a tribute to England midfielder Jude Bellingham ahead of the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Mexico.

The temporary signage was installed by Thameslink, which described the initiative as “a salute from South London to one of England’s stars.” The tribute was originally intended to remain in place for one day, but following England’s victory and Bellingham’s standout performance, Thameslink announced that the signs would stay up for several more days.

A Thameslink spokesperson said:

“Given yesterday’s result and Jude’s star performance, we are now looking to extend the duration that the signs stay up for.”

Approval was granted for the temporary signs to remain until Sunday, meaning they will still be on display during England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway on Saturday, 11 July.

It is important to note that the station’s official name has not changed. Bellingham railway station remains its official name, while the “Jude Bellingham” signs are a temporary tribute installed for England’s World Cup campaign.

What happened at Bellingham railway station?

On 5 July, Thameslink temporarily replaced or covered selected station signs at Bellingham railway station with signs displaying “Jude Bellingham.” The installation was designed as a light-hearted show of support for the England midfielder before the Round of 16 fixture against Mexico.

The temporary signage was visible throughout the station for passengers and visitors travelling through the area. The initiative quickly attracted attention on social media and in local news because of the station’s existing name, which matches the footballer’s surname.

Why was Bellingham railway station chosen?

The station was selected because it already carries the name Bellingham, making it an ideal location for a temporary football-themed tribute.

Bellingham railway station is situated in the London Borough of Lewisham, close to Catford, and is served by Thameslink services. The tribute was intended to celebrate Jude Bellingham’s contribution to England while creating a fun and memorable connection between the player’s surname and the station’s name.

Thameslink described the gesture as “a salute from South London to one of England’s stars.”

Why were the signs kept in place?

The tribute was initially planned to last for just one day. However, after England defeated Mexico and Jude Bellingham delivered an impressive performance, Thameslink decided to extend the display.

According to the rail operator, the decision was influenced by both England’s result and Bellingham’s performance during the match. Following the necessary approvals, the temporary signs were authorised to remain in place until Sunday.

As a result, passengers travelling through the station during England’s quarter-final against Norway will continue to see the special tribute.

What does the extension mean?

The extension allows supporters to continue enjoying the tribute throughout another important stage of England’s World Cup campaign.

Although the temporary signage changes the appearance of some station signs, the railway station itself has not been officially renamed. Timetables, journey planners, announcements and official railway information continue to use the station’s permanent name, Bellingham railway station.

Local reaction

The tribute has generated considerable interest among football supporters across South London. While Thameslink has not released detailed feedback from passengers, the decision to extend the signage suggests the initiative received a positive response.

Many commuters have stopped to photograph the signs, which have become a talking point during England’s World Cup run.

A celebration rather than a permanent change

Temporary station branding has previously been used by transport operators to celebrate major national events, sporting achievements and significant public occasions.

In this case, Thameslink used the existing name of Bellingham railway station to create a temporary tribute to Jude Bellingham during the World Cup.

The initiative does not represent a permanent renaming of the station. Once the tribute concludes, all temporary “Jude Bellingham” signage will be removed and the station will continue to operate under its official name, Bellingham railway station.

What could this mean for passengers?

Passengers travelling through Bellingham railway station may notice the temporary signage while using Thameslink services. Although the tribute has attracted attention, normal rail services, ticketing, journey information and station operations remain unchanged.

The initiative demonstrates how transport operators can engage with major sporting moments while maintaining normal railway operations. For football supporters, the temporary signs provide a memorable way to celebrate England’s progress in the World Cup, while for local residents they offer a unique talking point during the tournament.
