Key Points

  • Labour councillors in Lambeth have launched a petition against the Metropolitan Police’s plans to reduce hours at Brixton Police Station’s front counter, from 24/7 to 10am-10pm weekdays and 9am-7pm weekends.
  • This rebellion follows the collapse of London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan’s 2024 manifesto pledge to maintain a 24-hour police front counter in every borough.
  • The Met Police is addressing a £260 million budget shortfall by closing 18 front desks entirely, reducing from 37 to around 20-27 total, with only two—Lewisham and Charing Cross—remaining open 24 hours.
  • Lambeth Labour describes Brixton as their last remaining police station, vital for safety in a busy town centre, especially for elderly, vulnerable people, and crime victims needing face-to-face support.
  • The decision sends the “wrong message” amid falling violent crime, robbery, and gun crime in Lambeth, plus 28 extra officers secured for Brixton, and lacks consultation with residents, council, or stakeholders.
  • Sir Sadiq Khan defends the changes as an “operational decision for the Met” based on resources, funding, demand, after over a decade of austerity cuts.
  • Shadow Policing Minister Matt Vickers criticises Khan for failing promises, making streets less safe, with people stopping crime reports.
  • Unite union’s Sharon Graham calls closures “shortsighted,” leading to more crime, unreported offences, staff stress, without consultation.
  • Met spokesperson notes only 5% crimes reported at front counters last year; most via phone, online, or elsewhere; savings enable more community officers.
  • Initial proposals eyed 8 or 19 counters 24/7, later two; consultations ongoing, no final changes until later.
  • Susan Hall, GLA Conservative leader, slams secrecy on which counters close, broken promise.

Lambeth, South London (South London News) February 20, 2026 – Labour councillors in Lambeth have rebelled against London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan’s policing cuts, launching a petition to save Brixton Police Station’s 24-hour front desk after the collapse of his manifesto pledge to maintain such services in every borough. The Metropolitan Police’s plan to address a £260 million budget shortfall will leave only two stations—Lewisham and Charing Cross—with round-the-clock counters, slashing 18 entirely and reducing hours at others. Lambeth Labour insists the Brixton counter is “vital in keeping our borough safe,” decrying a lack of consultation.

What Pledged Sadiq Khan in His Manifesto?

Sir Sadiq Khan pledged during his 2024 re-election campaign to

“continue to ensure the Met is able to effectively respond to the public, including maintaining a 24-hour police front office counter in every borough.”

This commitment aimed to cover all 32 London boroughs with at least one such facility. However, the latest Met plans contradict this, prompting backlash from his own party members in Lambeth.

As reported by staff writers at the Daily Mail, the manifesto promise has been undermined by subsequent budget realities.

Why Are Police Front Counters Being Cut?

The Metropolitan Police faces a £260 million budget shortfall due to government spending constraints and years of austerity. Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist described the closures as “difficult choices” during a London Assembly session, expecting £7 million annual savings by reducing counters from 37 to 20, with 24/7 operations down to eight initially. A Met spokesperson explained:

“Given the Met’s budget deficit and shrinking size, it is no longer sustainable to keep all front counters open. Just five per cent of crimes were reported using front counters last year, with the vast majority of Londoners doing it over the phone, online, or in person with officers elsewhere.”

These measures allow resources to focus on combating crime and deploying more officers in communities, the Met added.

What Is the Lambeth Labour Petition About?

Lambeth Labour group started a petition to save Brixton Police Station’s front desk, stating it is

“vital for keeping our borough safe,”

especially in a bustling town centre with rising evening activity like the Mayor’s Summer Streets fund events. Under Met plans, it would operate 10am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 7pm weekends, forcing residents to Lewisham or Charing Cross for 24/7 access.

The group highlighted progress in tackling crime—with falls in violent crime, robbery, and gun crime—plus 28 extra officers for Brixton, arguing the cuts send the “wrong message” without proper consultation. Lambeth Labour opposes the plans, noting Brixton as their last police station, crucial for older people, vulnerable individuals, and victims relying on face-to-face support. They have written to the Deputy Mayor for Policing, urging the Met to reconsider.

As detailed on the Lambeth Labour website, the petition calls:

“Sign the petition and stand up for our community.”

How Has Sadiq Khan Responded to the Cuts?

A spokesperson for the mayor described the measures as an “operational decision for the Met,” influenced by resources, funding, and demand. They noted:

“After more than a decade of cuts exceeding a billion under the previous government, the Met is currently facing a very challenging financial situation. The Mayor is collaborating closely with the Met to enhance visible neighbourhood policing in our communities and is in discussions with the Home Office about the necessary funding for the Met to continue creating a safer London for all.”

In an ITV News interview, Sir Sadiq Khan defended:

“The commissioner’s got three criteria when it comes to front counters—resources, funding, and the demand of the front counters. Some front counters will stay open 24 hours a day in some boroughs in London where there is a demand, resources and funding. Some boroughs, frankly speaking, nobody uses the front counters after office hours, they’ll stay open during office hours, but after office hours there will be other ways.”

He added he had “resisted closing front counters unless absolutely necessary,” crediting City Hall funding.

What Criticism Has Come from Opposition and Unions?

Shadow Policing Minister Matt Vickers stated:

“Under Sir Sadiq’s leadership, Londoners feel less secure and are increasingly concerned about crime and anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhoods. The Mayor made numerous promises to Londoners, including the protection of 24/7 police front counters, but he has utterly failed. While Sadiq Khan spends money lavishly on various initiatives, he neglects the fundamental task of ensuring our streets are safe. People have already stopped reporting crimes, and it will become even more challenging with the closure of police front counters.”

He pledged Conservatives would recruit 10,000 new officers if elected.

Susan Hall, leader of the Greater London Authority Tories, criticised:

“Sadiq Khan is keeping Londoners completely in the dark about which police counters will be axed from their communities. This secrecy is utterly unacceptable when people are genuinely worried about losing this vital lifeline to report crimes and access police services. The Mayor has broken his manifesto promise and now he won’t even have the decency to tell Londoners which areas will be worst hit by his failures.”

Sharon Graham, general secretary of the Unite trade union, condemned:

“The decision to close so many police station front desks is incredibly shortsighted and will undoubtedly lead to increased crime, higher rates of unreported offences, and greater stress among staff. It is wholly unacceptable that such significant cuts are being implemented without any consultation with Unite.”

Which Stations Will Remain Open 24 Hours?

Only Lewisham and Charing Cross police stations will keep 24-hour front desks under the finalised Met plan agreed in October. The total counters drop from 37 to 27, with most on reduced hours: 08:00-22:00 weekdays and 09:00-19:00 weekends. Bishopsgate (City of London Police) also maintains 24/7 service separately.

Initial July proposals suggested eight 24/7 counters—one per three boroughs—with 11 reduced and 13 closed entirely.

What Is the Timeline of These Developments?

Proposals emerged in July 2025, with Sir Sadiq Khan defending them amid the £260m gap. August saw Met confirm cuts from 37 to 20 counters. October finalised two 24/7 sites. Lambeth petition launched around January 2026, gaining traction by February. A BBC report on February 18 noted a

“last-ditch call to save police front counters.”

What Impact on Lambeth and South London Residents?

Lambeth Labour warns vulnerable residents face longer journeys for urgent help, exacerbating safety concerns in Brixton—a key South London hub. Despite crime reductions locally, cuts risk reversing gains, per councillors. Broader London sees halved access, potentially deterring reports as Vickers claims.

The Met insists alternatives like phone, online reporting suffice for most, freeing officers for patrols.
