South London pupils continue to perform above national reading, writing and maths standards, latest figures show.

Findings by the Department for Education show pupils across London continue to outperform the national average in reading, writing and maths, with 70% of pupils meeting the expected standard and 13% of pupils achieving the higher standard, compared to 7%-9% in other regions across England.

Despite outperforming the national average, educational outcomes vary across South London, as recent data shows.

Data based on the English Indices of Deprivation ranks London neighbourhoods according to education and skills deprivation, including factors such as attainment and access to training, dividing neighbourhoods into quintiles.

The data identifies pockets of higher education deprivation in parts of Croydon, Bromley and southern Kingston. One neighbourhood in Bromley ranked 162nd out of 4,994 London neighbourhoods for education deprivation, placing it among the most education-deprived areas in the capital.

Southwark has also experienced a widening gap in educational attainment between students from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

The gap in Level 3 attainment between students eligible for Free School Meals and those who are not increased by 5.4 percentage points in Southwark between 2019/20 and 2024/25.

Level 3 qualifications include A levels and equivalent qualifications, which are studied after GCSEs.

However, education deprivation is not uniform across South London. While some neighbourhoods in Bromley, Croydon and Kingston rank among those facing the highest levels of deprivation, other areas perform considerably better. In Greenwich, neighbourhoods fall within the least education-deprived group, ranking 4729 out of 4994.

With educational outcomes varying between neighbourhoods, the data highlights the different experiences of pupils growing up across South London.
