What Is the South London Equity and Inclusion Initiative?

As reported by the journalist from Mirage News on October 26, 2025, nearly 1,000 people gathered at St George’s Cathedral in Southwark for a major community assembly led by King’s College London, Citizens UK, and South London Citizens. The event focused on advancing an equity and inclusion agenda centred around fair work, affordable housing, and health equity in South London.

The initiative brought together a diverse mix of residents, community leaders, NHS representatives, local authorities, government officials, and businesses. Over 170 members of the King’s College London community, including students, academics, and members of parent action groups like Parent Power and Empoderando Familias, actively participated to showcase community power in driving social change.

What Is the UK’s First Equity Neighbourhood?

During the assembly, the creation of the UK’s first Equity Neighbourhood in Southwark was officially announced. This neighbourhood aims to tackle significant disparities affecting life expectancy, which varies by up to eight years between different areas of the borough. The programme seeks to address underlying social and economic determinants of health such as housing conditions, service accessibility, income levels, and working hours.

Professor Funmi Olonisakin, Vice President (International, Engagement & Service) at King’s College London, spoke alongside Andrew Bland, Chief Executive of the NHS South East London Integrated Care System, and Councillor Sarah King, Leader of Southwark Council. All pledged their support for this bold initiative, emphasising a community-led model that places the voices of local residents at the core of policy and action.

The initiative draws inspiration from a successful Chicago-based model where collaboration between communities and health systems significantly reduced health inequities related to infant mortality and chronic diseases. The Southwark model aims to serve as a blueprint for tackling health inequality that could be replicated across the UK.

What Are the Pledges and Commitments Made?

The assembly featured a series of public commitments from decision-makers aimed at strengthening community wellbeing services, improving NHS care accessibility specifically for vulnerable groups, and utilising surplus NHS land for the building of affordable housing projects. This reflects a systemic effort to combat social determinants that affect health outcomes and economic stability.

Community-led programmes were also widely celebrated. For example, the Make London a Living Wage City campaign, spearheaded by Citizens UK and Trust for London, strives to lift thousands of Londoners out of in-work poverty by expanding the network of accredited Living Wage employers. This campaign has achieved considerable success with support from King’s College London students endorsing and helping South Bank institutions gain Living Wage accreditation, resulting in average pay rises up to £4,700 annually per full-time worker compared to the national minimum wage.

Gina Rodriguez, a Worker Leader on the campaign steering group and member of English for Action and Empoderando Familias, asserted,

“Work and wages are a priority for our communities. Good work and decent pay are the key drivers of good health, and our employers in the health system need to lead the way”.

In line with this ethos, St George’s Hospital Trust announced it will join the growing list of employers committing to pay the Living Wage, encouraging others across the health and social care sectors to follow suit.

How Are Community-Led Programmes Helping?

Several key grassroots programmes were showcased at the event for their ongoing success in improving health and wellbeing in South London. Be Well Hubs, led by South London Listens, work to enhance mental health support accessibility, whereas EmpowerESOL supports migrant parents by fostering confidence and language skills to help them better navigate UK systems. Both initiatives receive funding through King’s College London’s One King’s Impact Fund, which supports projects creating social value locally, nationally, and globally.

The event also featured a poignant cultural contribution from Aditi Banerjee, a King’s BA Social Sciences student, who performed her poem “We are the Voices Building Hope” alongside representatives from various London communities. The poem underscored the power of collective voices to inspire social change and the shared belief that community collaboration can forge a fairer, healthier future for South London.

What Are the Broader Efforts in South London for Equity and Inclusion?

The South London Partnership’s 2025 progress report highlights the region’s focus on connecting skills development with employers to meet local workforce needs in critical sectors such as construction, health care, hospitality, ICT, and education. This initiative aligns with broader goals of economic growth and social inclusion by equipping residents with market-relevant skills.

Matthew Hamilton, Director of South London Partnership, acknowledged South London’s adaptability in responding to employers’ needs, which has improved the skills and employment landscape for residents, contributing to economic opportunities and regional growth.

On health inequality fronts, the South East London Integrated Care System’s 2025-26 Joint Forward Plan focuses on building trust and promoting wellness in communities experiencing high health disparities. The system will develop integrated neighbourhood teams targeting specific vulnerable populations, including children with complex needs and people living with multiple long-term conditions or frailty. The plan also prioritises strengthening population health management and prevention efforts to tackle inequalities exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis.

Furthermore, South London Gallery has committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion through educational initiatives such as launching a Teacher Fellowship Programme to promote inclusiveness in arts education.

South London is witnessing a landmark mobilisation of communities, educational institutions, health services, and local government to advance a comprehensive equity and inclusion agenda. At the heart of this mobilisation is the newly announced Southwark Equity Neighbourhood, designed to tackle entrenched health and social inequalities through collaborative, community-led solutions.

Supported by King’s College London, Citizens UK, and South London Citizens, and joined by NHS leaders and elected officials, this initiative exemplifies a growing trend across the region to prioritise fair work, affordable housing, and accessible healthcare services as foundations for community wellbeing.
