- Initiative: Sutton Community Fridge expansion funding appeal.
- Platform: JustGiving crowdfunding campaign launched.
- Goal: Raise £2,000 for growth plans.
- Purpose: Support community fridge expansion efforts.
With the help of this funding, a new refrigerator will be opened in Langley, enabling them to assist additional families who are having financial difficulties.
Secretary Kirsty Larkin said:
“It’s an extremely important resource.
We have people who rely on us on a daily basis to feed their families, especially those with young children, the elderly and those on low incomes.”
Gayle Parks established Sutton Community Fridge in December 2024, and it currently serves about 200 individuals every week.
“Times were difficult”
,Kirsty said.
A group of twenty- five levies travel as far as Stockport, Knutsford, and Kidsgrove every day to gather redundant and leftover food from nearby supermarkets.
After that, the food is returned to the Sutton exfoliate so that individuals in need can pick it up the coming day.
They gathered two tonnes of food in just one week.
They are now trying to find a new apartment in Langley and need £2,000 to cover the deposit due to the increasing demand.
Kirsty added:
“We have outgrown the shed and because of the sheer volume of food we need to expand.
This location is more central and accessible, it will also enable us to have a community hub and a safe space for people to attend.
We would be able to provide a different variety of food items from FareShare (the UK’s largest charity fighting hunger and food waste) such as cupboard items and frozen goods and ensure they are safely stored away.”
Sutton Community Fridge is holding a Valentine’s Day bingo night in support of the JustGiving page.
This is scheduled for Friday, February 6 at the Sutton Ex-Servicemen’s Club.
How will the £2000 be used for expansion?
Sutton Community Fridge plans to use the£ 2,000 JustGiving appeal entirely for practical relocation and setup costs to expand from its current limited space into a larger unit, boosting capacity to serve further Wallington families facing food poverty.
1,200 covers essential appliances: a marketable double- door fridge(£ 700), upright freezer(£300), and heavy- duty shelving(£200) to store and display increased fat food from supermarkets like Tesco and M&S, raising daily portions from 200 to 500 while maintaining hygiene norms.
500 finances mileage acclimations including electrical rewiring for high- voltage appliances, plumbing for a Gomorrah station, and ventilation upgrades essential for food safety compliance. Professional installation ensures rapid-fire functional handover within four weeks of securing the new demesne.
