Residents in Southwark and Lambeth are being told to expect more police officers on the streets over the coming days and weeks, as the Metropolitan Police launches a fresh series of operations to tackle serious violence in the two south London boroughs.

Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, who leads the Central South basic command unit covering Southwark and Lambeth, said the increased presence will be focused on intelligence-led policing in known hotspots. The aim is to bear down on knife crime, moped-enabled offences and street robberies that have been a persistent concern for local communities.

According to Bond, local officers have already made progress over the past year, with reported figures indicating a 17% reduction in knife crime and a 69% fall in moped-enabled crime across the area. The new deployment of officers is intended to build on those gains and reassure residents that serious violence remains a top priority.

The Met says people living and working in Southwark and Lambeth may notice:

  • More uniformed patrols around town centres, estates and transport hubs
  • Targeted stop and search activity as part of specific operations
  • Visibility of specialist units in areas identified through crime data and intelligence

Police emphasise that the operations are designed to be focused rather than blanket sweeps and will be supported by work with partners on prevention and early intervention, including youth services and local authorities.

Southwark and Lambeth have historically recorded high levels of violent crime compared with many other parts of London. Serious violence strategies published by both boroughs highlight concerns about youth violence, knife crime, drug-related harm and exploitation, and call for joint action between the Met, councils and community organisations.

The latest Met initiative sits within that wider context, reflecting the continued pressure on police to cut street violence while maintaining trust among residents. Officers say they want people to feel safer seeing more police on the beat but also encourage local communities to come forward with information about weapons, robberies and groups involved in violent offending.

For Southwark and Lambeth, the coming weeks will test whether extra officers and targeted operations can continue to drive down key crime types, and whether visible enforcement can be balanced with longer-term work on the underlying causes of serious violence in south London.
