Key Points

  • Thameslink will begin the process of replacing over 60,000 seats made from the traditional “ironing board” style seats on all 115 trains operated by the company.
  • This will be undertaken during 2027 over a period of two years to ensure there is no disruption to rail services.
  • The new design will include seats with spring and memory foam cushions, which provide around 57% more comfort compared to the existing ones. They will include the wing-backed design offering increased shoulder and head rest.
  • Cushions in first class will also be upgraded, along with installing table rests on the seats-backs for the 69 trains, which do not have any such facilities.
  • This will be executed as part of the long-term maintenance agreement between Siemens Mobility and Thameslink at zero extra cost to the taxpayer.
  • This has been announced after Govia Thameslink Railway became a publicly-owned company.

London (South London News) September 11, 2026— Commuters travelling across major rail routes in Britain are set to experience a significant shift in journey comfort as plans are confirmed to overhaul thousands of controversial train seats.

What Changes Are Coming to Thameslink Trains?

As reported by Inside Croydon, Croydon commuters and millions of other passengers across the network are poised to benefit from more comfortable journeys. The publicly owned operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) is preparing to strip 60,000 “ironing board” seats from its carriages and replace them with better-cushioned alternatives.

The upgrade programme will affect standard-class seat cushions across all 115 trains in the Thameslink fleet. According to details published by Rail Technology Magazine, more than 60,000 new spring and memory foam seat cushions will be installed. These will be accompanied by redesigned winged backrests aimed at providing vastly improved shoulder and head support for passengers.

How Have Passengers and Officials Responded to the Seating Upgrade?

The announcement marks one of the most visible passenger-focused investments since GTR transferred into public ownership. Rail leaders are keen to demonstrate early improvements across one of the United Kingdom’s busiest commuter networks. For years, passengers have heavily criticised the existing Thameslink seating for its excessive firmness, which earned the interior fixtures the widely used nickname of “ironing-board” seats.

As reported by Railnews, GTR Chief Executive Officer John Whitehurst stated:

“Today is a brilliant milestone for GTR and our customers. Just 100 days since coming into public ownership, we’re showing how listening to passengers can deliver real, practical improvements.”

Mr Whitehurst added:

“I’m delighted that passengers have helped us shape this new Thameslink seat cushion and backrest. By testing comfort options with the people who use our trains every day, we’ve chosen a cushion that will make journeys more comfortable across our network. I’m really pleased for our customers and look forward to seeing the new seats come on board from 2027.”

Public members and commuters were given an opportunity to try out the new seat design firsthand during a public display held on September 10 and 11, 2026, at the London Bridge station concourse. The newly chosen configuration, shaped by extensive passenger feedback, provides up to 57 per cent more “give” than current standard cushions.

What Other Fleet Improvements Are Planned Alongside the New Seats?

Beyond standard-class seating adjustments, first-class seats will also receive the improved cushion updates. Furthermore, seat-back tables are being fitted onto the 69 trains within the fleet that currently lack them, creating greater consistency and utility for longer passenger journeys.

The seat replacement scheme is integrated into a broader £3.6 million fleet refresh currently underway across the Thameslink network. Since moving into public control, GTR has already refurbished nearly half of its train exteriors and refreshed almost 300 train toilet interiors.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander commented on the overarching changes:

“This is what public ownership looks like in action. Less than 100 days since GTR transferred into public control, we’re delivering on the improvements commuters have been asking for.”

Ms Alexander further noted:

“From next year, we’ll start getting rid of the dreaded ‘ironing-board’ seats so passengers can enjoy comfier, more pleasant journeys on some of Britain’s busiest commuter routes. We know fixing Britain’s railway is more than a refurb job. We’ve frozen fares for the first time in 30 years and publicly owned operators have added 76,000 extra seats onto the network.”

The installation work is scheduled to begin in 2027 and will be phased across a two-year window to prevent major service disruptions. Because the project runs as part of an existing long-term maintenance contract with Siemens Mobility, officials have confirmed that the upgrades will be delivered at no extra cost to taxpayers.

Background of the Particular Development

The decision to replace the Thameslink seating stems from years of continuous passenger dissatisfaction regarding the comfort levels of Class 700 rolling stock deployed across the network. When the high-capacity trains were originally introduced, their minimalist, firm seating layouts were selected to maximise passenger capacity and ease cleaning on densely packed commuter corridors stretching across London and the Home Counties. However, the rigidity of the seats quickly drew public backlash, leading to widespread complaints and the derogatory “ironing-board” moniker.

The transition of GTR into public ownership in May 2026 created a strategic window for the government and transport authorities to pivot towards passenger-led satisfaction metrics. Prompted by structural rail reforms and the impending establishment of Great British Railways, operators and government departments have prioritized visible enhancements to build public trust, address legacy complaints, and improve the overall daily experience for millions of regular railway users.

This infrastructure and interior refurbishment initiative is expected to directly impact daily commuters, regular leisure travellers, and long-distance passengers navigating the Thameslink network. For the hundreds of thousands of commuters who rely on these high-capacity routes between towns like Croydon, central London, and beyond, the replacement of 60,000 seat cushions with memory and spring foam variants will physically reduce commuter fatigue on prolonged journeys.

Additionally, the retrofitting of seat-back tables on the remaining 69 trains will improve productivity and convenience for working professionals who depend on transit time. Because the rollout will take place gradually over a two-year period starting in 2027, the phased scheduling is projected to shield passengers from systemic service cancellations or timetable reductions during the refitting process. Ultimately, the development serves as a tangible indicator for the audience of how public ownership frameworks intend to address historical ergonomic complaints and reshape commuter satisfaction standards across British national rail networks.
