Bromley Mencap is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year by launching a fundraising campaign to support local families with disabled and neurodivergent children and young people.
As part of the celebrations, the charity is inviting the community to get involved in two fundraising challenges this summer.
Funds raised will help Bromley Mencap grow and develop Family Futures, a children and families wellbeing service that provides early, preventative support, helping families access advice, build confidence and connect with others before challenges reach crisis point.
Steve Barnes, Chief Executive of Bromley Mencap, said:
“Reaching 75 years is a significant milestone for Bromley Mencap. We’re incredibly proud of the support we’ve provided to disabled people and their families over the years.
“We know from experience that families often need someone to listen, guide them through the options and help them feel less alone. That kind of trusted local support can make a lasting difference.
“This campaign is about looking ahead and making sure we can continue to be there for families who need us, when it matters most.”
For many families, having the right support early on can make a life-changing difference.
Sarah, whose son James has a learning disability, said:
“Bromley Mencap has been a lifeline for my family. The charity has always been there for us.”
Sarah first came to Bromley Mencap when she was looking for support for James. Over more than 20 years, the charity has supported both James and Sarah, helping James access activities, build friendships and stay connected to his community, while also giving Sarah advice, reassurance, opportunities for respite and friendships with other parents who understood her experience.
This is why Bromley Mencap is working to grow Family Futures, so more families can find advice, support and a trusted place to turn at an earlier stage.
Supporters can take part in Bridging 75 Years, a guided walk across London’s iconic bridges, or join 75 in Action, a flexible challenge where people can set their own walking goal throughout July.
The charity is encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get involved and support the next generation of families.
