South London communities are preparing for a series of events marking Windrush Day 2026, with local organisations aiming to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of the Caribbean community while educating younger generations about the Windrush legacy.

Among the events planned is a free family celebration at the South London Gallery in Peckham on June 27. The event will feature storytelling sessions, arts and crafts activities, music, and food designed to bring together families and residents from across the borough.

Windrush Day commemorates the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush in 1948, when hundreds of Caribbean migrants arrived in Britain to help rebuild the country after the Second World War. Many settled in South London, particularly in areas such as Brixton, Peckham, and Lewisham, helping shape the region’s cultural identity.

Organisers say this year’s celebrations are intended not only to honour the Windrush generation but also to encourage conversations about community, identity, and belonging.

The South London Gallery event has been developed in partnership with local residents’ groups and is expected to attract families from across the area. Activities will focus on storytelling and cultural exchange, giving children an opportunity to learn about Caribbean history through creative engagement.

Across the borough of Lambeth, additional events are also planned throughout June. Community groups, local councils, and cultural organisations will host talks, performances, and social gatherings highlighting the achievements and experiences of the Windrush generation.

One of the major highlights will be a community lunch in Brixton that aims to bring together Windrush elders and local residents. Cultural performances and musical events are also expected to take place, reflecting the significant influence Caribbean communities have had on South London’s arts and cultural landscape.

Community leaders have stressed the importance of preserving these stories as younger generations become further removed from the experiences of the original migrants.

For many residents, Windrush Day serves as both a celebration and a reminder of the challenges faced by those who arrived in Britain decades ago. While the contributions of the Windrush generation are widely recognised today, campaigners continue to call for greater awareness of the discrimination and hardships many experienced.

As South London prepares for another year of commemorations, organisers hope the events will strengthen community ties and ensure that the stories of the Windrush generation continue to be shared.

With family-friendly activities, cultural performances, and educational programmes planned across the region, Windrush Day 2026 is set to offer residents an opportunity to celebrate a vital chapter in South London’s history while looking toward the future.
