On the 26th August 2026, deadly flash floods began in Nepal, bringing devastating consequences to the country. More than 1,300 people have been confirmed dead in this climate change-induced disaster, with a further 5,500 still missing after nearly two weeks of rescue operations. On top of that, tens of thousands have been left without homes after entire villages and roads have been washed away.

The ramifications of this catastrophic event are being felt in communities across the world, especially by those with families in Nepal. This is also the case in South London, where many local businesses have been fundraising for victims of the floods – particularly Nepalese restaurants in the area.

Gurkhas in Balham are hosting a fundraising buffet on Sunday 13th September from 1 to 9pm, with all profits on the day being donated to charity. They’re selling tickets for ÂŁ20.50 per person, getting you access to all the food served on the day, while also giving guests the opportunity to donate more while they’re there.

This isn’t the only restaurant that has got involved in recent days. Blackheath’s Everest Inn held a fundraising evening on the 7th September, complete with authentic Nepalese buffet food, desserts and a charity raffle. Impressively, they donated 100% of every ÂŁ55 ticket that was sold to the Prime Minister of Nepal’s Disaster Relief Fund, as well as proceeds from the raffle.

Nearby, the staff from award-winning restaurant Panas Gurkha in Blackheath Village started a collection almost immediately after the flooding started, raising more than ÂŁ1,000 within just a few days. These guys are known for their charity work – they’ve been preparing free meals for those in need since the pandemic in 2020.

It’s clear that the Nepalese community in South London has made a huge effort to support relief missions in Nepal, with fundraising events popping up all over the region. And whether it’s by attending one of these fundraisers, donating elsewhere, or starting your collection for victims of the floods, there are countless ways to help in the aftermath of this disaster.
