UK (South London News) August 21, 2026 – Crystal Palace have reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea to sign Axel Disasi on loan, with the French defender now undergoing his medical as he closes in on a move to Selhurst Park.As reported by Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport and subsequently confirmed by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Crystal Palace have finalized a verbal agreement with Chelsea for the temporary transfer of Axel Disasi. Under the agreed financial terms, Crystal Palace have committed to paying Chelsea a loan fee alongside taking full responsibility for covering the player’s wages during his time at Selhurst Park.

As detailed by Ed Aarons of The Guardian, Crystal Palace turned their attention to Disasi after exploring alternative options to reinforce their defensive line.

The South London club had initially made inquiries regarding Chelsea’s England Under-21 international Josh Acheampong, but Chelsea management, led by head coach Xabi Alonso, made it clear that Acheampong would not be permitted to leave Stamford Bridge during this window. Consequently, Palace shifted focus to secure Disasi, who had been training away from Chelsea’s primary squad after failing to feature in Alonso’s long-term tactical plans.

Why were Crystal Palace actively searching for central defenders?

Crystal Palace entered the market for experienced central defenders following significant squad turnover across the summer. The club lost core defensive assets in quick succession, seeing Maxence Lacroix complete a £52 million transfer to Chelsea and former captain Marc Guéhi depart for Manchester City. These departures created an immediate need for proven Premier League experience within the squad.

As stated by Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage during a pre-match press conference on Thursday, the club required specific attributes to stabilize the back line:

“Yes. We need a player in this department, a player with a lot of games, if possible, in the Premier League. We need players, but we need a leader and that’s why we need to wait a little bit to find a good one.”

When asked directly about the ongoing negotiations regarding Disasi, Sage remarked:

“He’s a player from Chelsea, it’s difficult for me to speak about a player of another club, but I hear the same noise as you.”

Background of Axel Disasi’s Premier League Career and Chelsea Exiles

Axel Disasi original move to English football occurred in August 2023, when Chelsea signed the defender from Monaco for a reported fee of £38.5 million. He marked his competitive debut for the Blues by scoring an equalizer in a 1–1 draw against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Despite making regular starts during his initial campaign, Disasi’s standing within the club gradually altered following managerial changes and squad restructuring.

Having fallen out of favor at Stamford Bridge, Disasi spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa, contributing to their domestic and European campaigns.

Upon returning to Chelsea, he was again loaned out in February 2026, joining West Ham United for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, where he registered 17 appearances in all competitions.

Ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, Disasi was omitted from Chelsea’s main squad setup and left without a assigned squad number after his previous number 2 jersey was reassigned to summer signing Marco Palestra. Despite receiving inquiries from Serie A sides AC Milan and Roma, as well as Portuguese club Benfica, Disasi opted to remain in London to finalize terms with Crystal Palace.

Prediction: How This Development Affects Crystal Palace and Chelsea

The arrival of Axel Disasi provides immediate structural relief for Crystal Palace supporters and management. Following the high-profile exits of Lacroix and Guéhi, the addition of a 28-year-old French international with extensive Premier League and European experience offers defensive cover alongside summer additions Takehiro Tomiyasu and Oscar Mingueza. By securing a straight loan without long-term transfer commitments, Palace retain financial flexibility to assess their permanent defensive recruitment strategy in future windows while addressing immediate operational needs.

For Chelsea, finalizing the loan allows the club to streamline its first-team roster under Xabi Alonso. Clearing Disasi’s salary obligations off the wage bill while securing an upfront loan fee assists Chelsea with financial compliance guidelines as they continue to refine their squad composition.

For Disasi, the move offers regular playing time in the Premier League, granting him an opportunity to re-establish consistent form in a familiar domestic environment.
